
VET HARASSED - An assault on a veterinarian at a Bereldange clinic on Saturday night prompted a temporary shutdown, with police believing that they have identified a suspect. A physician working at the veterinary clinic in Bereldange was harassed and assaulted by a man on Saturday night. A Facebook post later notified people that the clinic would be closed overnight as a consequence.
CONSTRUCTION CRISIS - Amidst rising concerns over potential bankruptcies in the construction sector due to heightened interest rates, employers and unions remain at odds over the primary challenges facing the industry at the end of the collective leave period, which concluded this past weekend. Unions and employers are currently negotiating the possibility of a new collective contract, but talks are said to be moving slowly.
DIESEL PRICE - After a slight drop last week, diesel and heating oil are set to go up in price again today. Diesel will rise 3.5 cents to €1.62 per litre, while heating oil will climb by over 3 cents to just over €1 per litre.
NUCLEAR WATER - Japan will begin releasing cooling water from the stricken Fukushima power plant on Thursday, 12 years after one of the world’s worst nuclear disasters. The announcement came despite opposition from fishermen and protests by China, which has already banned food shipments from several Japanese states. Japan insists the gradual release into the sea of the more than 500 Olympic swimming pools’ worth of water that has accumulated at the stricken nuclear plant is safe, a view backed by the UN atomic agency.
TRUMP BAIL - Donald Trump said he will turn himself in on Thursday in Georgia to face racketeering and other charges stemming from his bid to overturn the 2020 election. The judge in the case has set bail at $200,000. The agreement says Trump can remain free pending trial, so long as he does not attempt to threaten or intimidate witnesses. Trump denies all 13 charges.
THAILAND EX-PM - Thailand’s former premier Thaksin Shinawatra has arrived back in his country from exile, threatening fresh instability on the day parliament votes for a new prime minister after three months of political deadlock. Thaksin, the most influential and controversial politician in recent Thai history, has been in self-imposed exile for 15 years.
GREECE FIRES / FRANCE HEAT - Greek firefighters are battling wildfires that have broken out amid scorching temperatures, with two villages north of the capital Athens evacuated. One of the worst fire fronts is near the port city of Alexandroupoli, close to the border with Turkey. Record temperatures are also expected in France today and tomorrow, with the most intense heat in the southern parts of the country where the mercury is already pushing past 40 degrees Celsius. The current high temperatures are the hottest of the season, according to Meteo France.
ATHLETICS - At the World Athletics championships in Budapest, Sweden’s Olympic discus champion Daniel Stahl has produced a championship record of 71.46m with his last throw to reclaim the world title and Sha’Carri Richardson of the United States also set a championship 100m record of 10.65 – from lane nine – to earn her first global title. In the two other finals on day three, Burkina Faso’s Hugues Fabrice Zango claimed his first global triple jump title with a best of 17.64m and Grant Holloway of the United States won his third consecutive 110m hurdles gold in a season’s best of 12.96.
RUGBY - England are set to find out today what impact, if any, disciplinary rulings on Billy Vunipola and Owen Farrell will have for their Rugby World Cup campaign. Vunipola was sent off during a 29-10 warm-up loss to Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.As happened to Farrell the previous weekend, Vunipola saw his initial yellow card upgraded to a red by the recently introduced bunker review system. But with England having just one more warm-up match before the World Cup -- against Fiji at Twickenham on Saturday -- any suspension would cast a cloud over their chances at the World Cup.
FOOTBALL - Thierry Henry has been named as coach of France’s Under-21s and will be in charge of the team competing at next year’s Olympics in Paris. The 46-year-old former Arsenal and France striker replaces Sylvain Ripoll and returns to management after leaving his role as Belgium assistant following last year’s World Cup.
