In the latest edition of the Household Budget Survey, data shows that the average household in 23 EU member states allocated 32.7% of their household expenditure to housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels in 2020. Rounding off the top three allocations of household expenditures are food and on-alcoholic beverages at 17.1%, followed by transport at 10.8%. In total, 23 countries within the EU allocate just under 61% of their total household expenditure to housing, food and transport.

Further analysis reveals differences among countries. In the vast majority of countries, expenditure on housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels represented the highest share of household expenditure. These shares ranged anywhere from 8.4% in Malta all the way to 49.2% in Hungary.
While food and non-alcoholic beverages represented the second most important household expenditure for most member states, five countries placed higher importance on something else; transport.
Unsurprisingly, Luxembourg was among the member states whose second most important share of household expenditure is allocated to transport. Rounding off the list are Denmark, Germany, Austria and Slovenia.
