In the midst of a 36° heatwave, the animal was made to cart tourists around the popular holiday spot in south Italy until it collapsed and died of exhaustion.
Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported on the story, with a journalist sharing some photos on his Twitter account.
Deputy Michela Vittoria Brambilla has also been quoted by the paper saying that the incident counted as a “national disgrace”, and environmental activists are demanding that horses no longer be used to cart tourists around, especially in this heat.
An autopsy will be performed to discover both the exact circumstances of the horse’s demise, as well as the conditions it was kept in.
