PUBLIC DEBT - The National Council of Public Finances has projected that Luxembourg’s public debt could range from 70% to a staggering 223% of GDP by 2070, depending on various economic and demographic factors. The estimates, based on data from the EU Commission, highlight the potential impact of an ageing population and rising costs.

STUDENT FAIR - The Belval university campus is once again hosting its annual student fair today, where various universities and educational institutions are represented. Students have the opportunity to explore a wide range of study options at over 120 different stands. A key highlight at this year’s fair is the option for a bachelor’s degree in medicine at the University of Luxembourg.

Following an agreement between the Ministry of Higher Education and the country’s student unions, the Ministry has announced plans to improve financial support for students in 2026/2027 by factoring in wage indexations into the calculation of student grants.

UNFRIENDLY LUXEMBOURG - Mark Wolters, a travel vlogger from the United States with over 1 million subscribers on his YouTube channel ‘Wolters World,’ has listed Luxembourg as the most unfriendly country he has travelled to, citing the lack of service and friendliness in stores and restaurants. The video received 1.4 million views in just four months. Speaking to RTL Today, he did however concede that he really enjoyed the cleanliness of Luxembourg, as well as the sites and environment of the capital and country.

MEDICAL DRONE - Luxembourg is currently developing a medical drone to be used in critical emergency situations. Dubbed the “Griffin project”, this innovative initiative brings together Luxembourg Air Ambulance, Laboratoires Réunis, Santé Services, and Post. The project aims to offer faster and more efficient transportation of medical samples across the country.

World

MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT - Efforts have resumed in Qatar to restart negotiations to reach a ceasefire and hostage-exchange deal between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Hamas has said it is ready to stop fighting if Israel agrees to a ceasefire deal. Speaking after talks in Doha, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he believed the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar could open the way for an agreement.

COMMONWEALTH MEETING - Britain’s King Charles has urged the Commonwealth countries to commit to learning lessons of the past to the opening of the meeting of Commonwealth leaders, where the issue of reparations for slavery has been raised. King Charles, who is the head of the 56-nation group didn’t directly reference the matter in his speech but said it was time to find creative ways to right inequalities that endure within the Commonwealth.

MENENDEZ BROTHERS - The District Attorney in Los Angeles is to ask a judge to re-sentence the two brothers, who murdered their parents in 1989. Eric and Lyle Menendez were originally sentenced to life. As the popularity of the case grew with the recent Netflix documentary and with added evidence of their father’s history of sexual abuse, a resentencing could mean eligibility for parole.

US ELECTIONS - Celebrities including the actors Samuel Jackson and Tyler Perry, the film director Spike Lee, and singers Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen have joined a rally in the US state of Georgia in support of the Democratic candidate for President, Kamala Harris. She drew applause from thousands of supporters as she told them “we’re not going back”. At his own rally in Arizona, Donald Trump promised to deport millions of illegal immigrants.

Sport

FOOTBALL – The Women’s European Qualifiers play-offs start today. Luxembourg’s national team is playing against Sweden tonight at 7.30pm at the Stade Emile Mayrisch in Esch. The return match next week is in Gothenburg. The Swedish team are the big favorite and currently number 5 in the world. We will broadcast the match tonight in a live stream on RTL Today.

In international football, today is the 8th matchday in the German Bundesliga. Mainz is playing Moenchengladbach. In France, Rennes is playing against Le Havre. And in England, Leicester plays Nottingham.

Among Europa League games last night, Tottenham Hotspur made it three wins from three with a 1-0 win at home to AZ Alkmaar, but Manchester United remain winless after being held to a 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce.

BASEBALL - The most eagerly anticipated World Series showdown in decades gets under way today as the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the New York Yankees in what promises to be a baseball blockbuster for the ages. All eyes will be on the Dodgers’ Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani, the record-breaking phenomenon regarded as the best all-round player since the legendary Babe Ruth.

Don’t get lost in the morning mist – which could be rather heavy in some areas – because the afternoon seems to be bringing out the sunshine among a few scattered clouds. Expect a few whiffs of southern breeze going up to 20 km/h, but nothing too rowdy.
The morning will heat up a bit, with temperatures in the 8–10°C range, going up to 14–16°C in the afternoon.
