
The alcohol ban will come into effect on Friday 31 July and last until 3 August (between 8pm and 6am), German media reported.
The sale and consumption of alcohol will be prohibited in public spaces during those times, Senator for Social Affairs Melanie Leonard said. Restaurants are excluded from the ban.
The ban will come into effect in certain neighborhoods of the city, including nightlife hotspots such as St Pauli and Altona.
The disease control agency in Germany meanwhile voiced “great concern” over rising virus numbers in the country -- in the last seven days it has registered an average of 557 new cases a day, up from around 350 in early June. German authorities also updated their travel advisory, recommending against travel to three regions in northern Spain, all grappling with renewed outbreaks.
