To fight right-wing extremismGerman politician wants to reintroduce compulsory military service

RTL Today
According to Vera Högl from the German Socialist Party (SPD), the suspension of compulsory military service in 2011 was a big mistake.

Högl stated that a compulsory military service could also prevent far-right tendencies.

She went on to say that even back in 2011, politicians already worried that right-wing extremism would develop faster in a professional army. Högl also thinks that it would be beneficial to the German Federal Defence Forces if a large part of the population would serve in it for a certain period of time. This in turn would make it more difficult for right-wing extremism to spread, according to the politician.

Högl plans to launch a discussion on this subject in the next year alongside the question if the service should be the same for men and women.
