Many residents of Luxembourg and Germany’s Rhineland Palatinate raised concerns with CDU politician Andreas Steier about the fact that border closures have seperated families living on both sides, and that cross-border medical visits are no longer possible.

Caring for minors was already an acceptable reason to cross the border, German police had stated. Now registered or married couples can pass into the neighbouring region to see each other, but must bring along proof of their registered partnership or marriage. Non-registered couples cannot verify this, and are thus not permitted to cross into Germany or Luxembourg.

Pupils attending cross-border schools still require a certificate.
