“30 firetrucks and 100 firefighters have been mobilised and deployed to the site,” said a spokesman for the Paris fire brigade. “The fire is almost under control, there are no casualties and there is no risk of the fire spreading,” he added.

The Val-de-Marne prefecture shared further information on their official Twitter account: “A fire erupted in a fruit and vegetable depot at 12.20pm”. Thick black smoke was visible for several kilometres around Rungis International Market during the middle of the day.

Also on Twitter, fire brigades advised people to avoid the area and facilitate access for emergency services.

Extending over 234 hectares, Rungis International Market is the world’s largest market for fresh produce. It is located seven kilometres south of the Paris city centre.

At the end of June, a fire already erupted in the industrial zone of the market without leaving anyone injured. A furnace fire got out of control before spreading through the catalyst.
