FRIEDEN FAKE VIDEO -
Luxembourg’s Ministry of State has issued a warning regarding a fake video of Prime Minister Luc Frieden circulating on social networks. The video falsely depicts Prime Minister Luc Frieden inviting viewers to invest money in an artificial intelligence programme. An investigation has been launched.

CANNES PRIZE - A Luxembourg co-production has won the coveted “Grand Prix” award the Cannes Film Festival. The feature film ‘All We Imagine as Light’ by Indian director Payal Kapadia was produced in collaboration with the Luxembourg production company Les Films Fauves and financially supported by the Luxembourgish National Fund for Audiovisual Production Support (Film Fund).

HOUSE FIRE - Shortly after 1am, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) responded to reports of a fire on Rue St Nicolas in Remich. Additionally, the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU) from Luxembourg City attended to one injured individual at the scene. At this time, no further details have been released.

World

EU FOREIGN AFFAIRS - EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels this morning and there could be major disagreements. Last week, the Council introduced the use of Russian assets that have been frozen here in the EU, to support Ukraine’s armed forces and purchase weapons. The sum is approximately 3 billion euros per year, but according to the principle of unanimity, all 27 countries must give the green light. Hungary is against it.

Xavier Bettel and his counterparts are also discussing the Middle East today. An exchange with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan, as well as the Secretary General of the Arab League is on the agenda.

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says 35 people have been killed and dozens injured by an Israeli airstrike on a refugee camp near the city of Rafah. Israel says it was targeting a command centre, used by Hamas and the dead include senior members of the militant group.

PANDEMIC TREATY - Member states of the World Health Organisation are meeting in Geneva today, amid growing pressure for a global pandemic treaty. An agreement aimed at correcting mistakes and inequalities highlighted by Covid-19 hasn’t yet been reached.

GERMANY MACRON - French President Emmanuel Macron is on a historic state visit to Germany, the first in 24 years. Today he will meet German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, visit a Holocaust memorial and in the afternoon, Macron will give a speech in Dresden, where he is expected to warn against right-wing populism, two weeks before the European elections.

FOOTBALL - Yesterday was the last match day in national football. Among the matches, Mondercange beat Kaerjeng 2-1 and remains in the national division. Fola Esch beat the champions Differdange 2-0. Mersch lost 2-0 to Rosport and Strassen also lost to Hesperange 2-0.

FORMULA 1 - Charles Leclerc won yesterday’s Monaco Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver was able to hold his own ahead of Oscar Piastri for McLaren and his team-mate Carlos Sainz. World champion Max Verstappen came in 6th place. The next race is the weekend of June 7th and 9th in Montreal.

CYCLING - Tadej Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia last night, crossing the finish line in Rome in glorious sunshine and with the biggest winning margin in almost six decades. The overall triumph was sealed on the 21st and final stage around Rome, which was won by Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier, who picked up his third stage win of the 2024 Giro.

TENNIS - Yesterday was the start of the French Open. Among the matches, Carlos Alcaraz clearly beat the American J.J Wolf in 3 sets and Andy Murray was beaten in straight sets by fellow three-time major winner and 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka. Today, one game in particular, will be of interest. Alexander Zverez, currently number 4 in the world, is taking on Rafael Nadal in the afternoon, who has won 14 times in Paris, with a record of 112 victories, with just 3 defeats.
