ELECTION RESULTS - The votes have been counted and the results are in for Luxembourg’s national election. The big winner is Luc Frieden and the CSV, who must now choose its future coalition partner, from either Xavier Bettel’s DP or Paulette Lenert’s LSAP. With the CSV securing the greatest number of seats - 21 out of 60 - and the current government coalition - consisting of the DP-LSAP-and The Greens - only securing a total of 29 seats - a new coalition and prime minister will reside at the head of the Luxembourg parliament. Talks regarding potential coalition partnerships will now commence. All the details can be found here.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT - At around 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, a serious accident occurred on the A31 motorway a few kilometres from the Luxembourg border with traffic strongly disrupted in both directions. Four people were injured in the accident, with two dogs - being carried in one of the vehicles involved - unfortunately perishing at the scene. Around thirty firefighters and a dozen vehicles were mobilised as a result of the incident.

ISRAEL CONFLICT - Israel is engulfed in its most intense fighting in decades, with over 700 Israelis and more than 400 Palestinians reported dead, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to warn of a “long and difficult” war, a day after Hamas fired a barrage of thousands of rockets at Israel, and sent a wave of fighters into the country who gunned down civilians and took at least 100 hostages. Several other countries have reported nationals killed, abducted or missing in the fighting - among them Brazil, Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Nepal, Thailand and Ukraine. At an emergency session of the UN Security Council, the United States and Israel urged strong condemnation of the Palestinian Islamists.

EGYPT SHOOTING - An Egyptian policeman shot dead two Israeli tourists and their Egyptian guide. A fourth person was wounded and the policeman was “immediately arrested”. Israel’s National Security Council later said its citizens should consider not travelling abroad particularly in the Middle East “on the backdrop of the attack in Egypt.” It said visitors already in Egypt should leave “as soon as possible.”

HONG KONG SHUTDOWN - Asian finance hub Hong Kong halted trading at its stock exchange on Monday and closed schools, after Typhoon Koinu generated torrential rainfall overnight. The Hong Kong Observatory stated that Koinu -- which caused one death in Taiwan last week -- had weakened into a severe tropical storm by Monday, as it moved toward the coastal areas of China’s Guangdong province. While no major damage was initially reported, the hoisting of the second-highest typhoon warning on Sunday evening caused issues at Hong Kong’s international airport, where hundreds of arriving passengers were stranded without bus, subway or taxi services.
