Ferdinand GrapperhausDutch justice minister faces criticism for breaking social distancing rules at own wedding

RTL Today
Dutch opposition parties expressed their anger with Minister of Justice Ferdinand Grapperhaus after media released pictures of him not adhering to social distancing rules at his own wedding last weekend.

The pictures show Grapperhaus hugging and shaking hands of guests, despite a nation-wide campaign to maintain a distance of more than 1,5 metres at all times.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte admitted that things had gone wrong at the wedding, but remained convinced the event would not undermine the minister’s credibility.

Grapperhaus drew harsh criticism from opposition parties. Socialist Party leader Lilian Marijnissen described it as “simply not an accident” as he was actively shaking hands, with Lodewijk Asscher from the Worker’s Party adding that his attitude will have an impact on the behaviour of police officers on the streets, and the public in general.

Many social media users have called for his resignation since.

Grapperhaus apologised after the release of the pictures, adding that he had kindly reminded guests before and during the wedding to maintain distance and respect the coronavirus measures in place.

As the face of law enforcement in the Netherlands, Grapperhaus partakes in frequent press conferences, urging the country to adhere to the restrictions.

Police officers have handed out fewer fines over the past weekend in a symbol of protest for the justice minister not setting the right example.

On Wednesday Grapperhaus will defend himself in a parliamentary discussion.
