In an interview with RTL, Democratic Party (DP) MP Gusty Graas, President of the Chamber's Foreign Affairs Committee, offered his initial assessment of the US midterm election results.
He described the results as a clear sign that Donald Trump's political approach had "failed", stating that the US President had been dealt a hefty blow.
Graas welcomed the clarity of the result, suggesting that Trump was left with no choice but to accept the outcome.
However, Graas also warned against excessive optimism. He pointed out that while Trump was politically weakened domestically, he would still seek to present himself as a strong leader on the international stage.
As Commander-in-Chief, Trump remained in control of the US military, and Graas said little change should be expected in foreign policy, particularly regarding NATO, Vladimir Putin, or Ukraine. The Democrats' influence, he noted, would be felt primarily through the Senate.
Looking ahead, Graas predicted an eventful period for US politics. In the short term, however, he does not expect any fundamental change in American foreign policy, though he said further turbulence was likely.
According to Graas, the United States is likely to remain, at least in part, unstable for some time.
