HOUSE FIRE – Rescue services reported a house fire in Troisvierges yesterday evening, with one person suffering injuries. A RTL reporter attended the scene and confirmed that the fire was under control by 8pm. Details are still missing, but the rescue helicopter was in action, as were firefighters from nearby villages.

FLU WAVE – The current flu wave is causing increased absences in schools. Flu season is definitely in full swing, as confirmed by the laboratories in the country. The state laboratory is also confirming an increase in respiratory disease in children. According to Bionext laboratory, 40% of tests among children under the age of 11 detected the influenza virus A in January.

LUXAIR CANCELLATIONS – Luxair announced last night that two of their flights had to be cancelled yesterday. A plane heading to Luxembourg from Cape Verde did not take off due to a technical problem and a flight heading to Porto took off and came back, though no reason has been given yet. New flights will be organised for today.

EDUCATION – The National Trade Union of Teachers has warned of potential chaos with the nationwide implementation of the French literacy programme , called ‘Alpha’, in 2026. The union wants a phased-out introduction amid fears that having French and German literacy programmes within the same class will cause organisational problems.

World

TURKEY FIRE – A fire at a ski resort hotel in northwestern Turkey has killed 76 people and injured dozens on Tuesday, forcing panicked guests to jump out of windows in the middle of the night. The fire began around 3.30am on the restaurant floor of the 12-storey Grand Kartal Hotel. President Tayyip Erdogan has declared today a day of national mourning.

TRUMP AI – President Trump has announced a huge artificial intelligence project called ‘Stargate’. It will see the private sector invest more than $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the US over the next four years. Trump was speaking at the White House where he was joined by the heads of three major tech firms – Open AI, Oracle and Softbank. He says the announcement is a declaration in confidence in America’s potential.

President Trump has also sought to justify his decision to pardon more than 1,500 supporters, who stormed the US Capitol building four years ago. At the same news conference in Washington, Trump described their punishment as “ridiculous and excessive”.

RAZZIE NOMINATIONS – Joker: Folie a Deux has been nominated for seven Razzies, leaving the sad clown atop the annual tongue-in-cheek list of the worst movies of the year. Joaquin Phoenix -- who won best actor at the Oscars in the first Joker film -- is nominated for worst actor, alongside Lady Gaga for worst actress. Presidential biopic Reagan and video game adaptation Borderlands are nominated for six while Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted earned four nominations.

FOOTBALL – Starting with some football results from last night’s Champions League games, Benfica lost a tough match 5-4 against Barcelona at home. Liverpool beat Lille 2-1, Atletico also beat Leverkusen 2-1, and it was also 2-1 for Bologna against Borussia Dortmund. Bruges and Juventus drew 0-0.

Today are the next nine matches, with all eyes on Paris St Germain taking on Manchester City. Other games include Real Madrid vs Salzburg, Rotterdam against Bayern, and AC Milan take on Girona.

TENNIS – At the Australian Open, the last quarter final matches are taking place. American Ben Shelton is currently playing against Italian Lorenzo Sonego. At 9.30am our time, the number one in the world, Italian Janik Sinner, will face the Australian player Alex De Minaur. Novak Djokovic has qualified for the semi-final against Alexander Zverev, after taking down Carlos Alcaraz in four sets yesterday.

Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek have meanwhile qualified for the women’s semi-finals.

BASEBALL – Global baseball’s hit king Ichiro Suzuki has become the first Japanese-born player elected to Major League baseball’s Hall of Fame. The Seattle Mariners star headlines the 2025 Hall of Fame class to be enshrined at Cooperstown, New York. At a press conference at the Mariners’ ballpark, Ichiro said he was still absorbing the news after getting the official Hall of Fame call.

After a night of freezing fog, the day kicks off with plenty of clouds and perhaps a glimpse of sunshine. The clouds will linger throughout, with moderate rain possible by evening. As for temperatures, expect a chilly start between -1°C and 1°C, with daytime and evening highs potentially reaching 4°C.
