
NIGER REPATRIATION - Following last week’s military coup in Niger, all Luxembourg nationals have been safely repatriated from the country. The final three citizens were brought back on Tuesday evening, as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to RTL.
Niger is among the target countries for Luxembourg’s cooperation aid but in light of the recent coup, Luxembourg, along with other European nations, has decided to freeze its aid initiatives. Minister Franz Fayot explained that aid was stopped immediately and will not be reinstated until Niger’s President is released and restored to office.
GUNMAN ARRESTED - A man was arrested in Esch-sur-Alzette on Tuesday evening because he allegedly fired a weapon. Reports say the perpetrator opened fire twice, narrowly missing one young pedestrian. Witnesses claim he also targeted other passers-by, including a woman with a buggy. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. He was brought before magistrates on Wednesday.
REMERSCHEN STABBING - Police also reported the stabbing of a man in Remerschen late on Tuesday afternoon.The victim was discovered on Rue du Vin, bleeding heavily from multiple stab wounds in his abdomen and thigh. Initial reports suggest he was attacked by three individuals a few hundred metres from the location where he was found.Emergency services administered treatment on the spot before transporting the man to hospital. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.
CASTING CALL - A casting call for dancers in Christian Neuman’s latest film ‘Stargazer’ has been put out. Deal Productions is seeking dancers between the ages of 18 and 45 for the upcoming feature film, with auditions to be held in Luxembourg between October and November this year. All submissions should be sent by the deadline of 20 August.
US DEATH SENTENCE - A gunman, who killed 11 people at a synagogue in the US city of Pittsburgh has been sentenced to death. 7 other people were injured in the attack in 2018. It’s the first federal death sentence imposed under the Biden administration. Reporters inside the court room said the murder Robert Bowers had no reaction when the verdict was read out.
TRUMP INDICTMENT - Donald Trump is due in court after he was charged with offences related to alleged attempts to overturn the result of the presidential election in 2020. Mr Trump’s aides have compared the latest criminal charges to the persecutions in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
TRUDEAU SEPARATION - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie have announced they are separating in an unexpected announcement that appears to mark the end of the couple’s 18-year high profile marriage. Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau were married in May 2005 and have three children, aged 15,14 and nine. The couple asked for privacy ahead of a family vacation schedule for next week.

FOOTBALL - In the European Conference League - Dudelange won at home 2-1 against Gzira from Malta last night, but it was not enough to reach the next round. This evening Progres Niederkorn are playing Midtyland from Denmark. And FC Differdange will face NK Maribor from Slovenia.
In the Women’s World Cup today, Germany will play against South Korea and Colombia against Morocco. Yesterday, the Swedish team beat Argentina, South Africa won against Italy 3-0, France beat Panama with 6 goals to 4 and Jamaica heads to the knock out stage for the first time, as Brazil crashed out of the tournament following a 0-0 draw.
BUFFON RETIRES - Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has announced his retirement at the age of 45, sparking tributes from the world of football.In a statement, his team Juventus said he was not only the best, he did more than that, he became THE goalkeeper. Buffon holds the record for most Serie A matches contested and is the most capped player in Italy’s history with 176.
