MURDER CONFESSION - A 58-year-old woman, missing since last Friday, was found dead near Scheidgen, with her husband now in pre-trial detention after confessing to her murder. Preliminary investigations raised suspicion about the involvement of the victim’s husband. Several days after the woman’s disappearance, her husband admitted to her murder and disclosed the whereabouts of her body to the authorities.

CAR ACCIDENT - A serious accident took place in the west of Luxembourg yesterday, on the the road from Wolwelange and Perlé. Two cars were involved in a full-frontal collision, leaving three people injured. The air rescue helicopter was deployed to assist with the victims, accompanied by three ambulances.

PETROL PRICE DOWN - Today sees a notable decline in petrol prices at the pumps in Luxembourg, marking the second consecutive decrease in the cost of SP95 fuel in just three days. The litre price for SP95 has fallen by nearly 8 cents, with the most recent drop of 4.5 cents bringing it to €1.559 per litre. On Tuesday, the cost of SP98 also fell by 5.2 cents and now stands at €1.832 per litre.

NATIONAL ELECTIONS - Sunday 8 October marks the national (or legislative) elections in Luxembourg, with the country’s citizens casting their vote and determining who will lead the country for the next five years. TENACIOUS D - Tenacious D, the duo comprised of Kyle Gass and Jack Black have announced they are coming to Luxembourg as part of The Spicy Meatball tour. Known for their blend of rock and comedy, they will perform at the Rockhal for one night on the 3 May next year. Tickets go on sale today at 11am.

UKRAINE ATTACK - There has been international condemnation of the deadliest missile strike to hit Ukraine in more than a year. Officials say the Russian attack on a café and grocery store in northeastern Ukraine killed more than 50 people. Many of the victims had been attending a funeral wake. Ukraine’s President Volodymr Zelensky said the location of the strike was deliberate.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE - The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in Oslo this morning at 11 o’clock. Some betting sites are predicting that Ukrainian organizations that document Russian war crimes, the International Criminal Court or climate activists could be chosen. But due to the ongoing armed conflicts in the world, experts are also of the opinion that it could be that no Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded this year. This only happened once before, in 1972 during the Vietnam War.

EU SUMMIT - The heads of state and government of the 27 EU countries are meeting today for a summit. Just like the meeting of the Political Community yesterday, the meeting is taking place in Granada in southern Spain. Central subjects are the fight against illegal migration as well as a discussion on when accession talks with Ukraine should start. No decision is expected.

RUGBY - New Zealand has cantered to the bonus-point victory they needed to secure qualification for the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals with an 11-try 73-0 thrashing of Uruguay yesterday. Tonight, France takes on Italy ahead of a busy weekend of games including Wales vs Georgia and England against Scotland.

BASKETBALL - The reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid has announced he will play for the United States at next year’s Paris Olympics. Embiid was also eligible to play international basketball for Cameroon and France but has instead opted to join what is expected to be a star-studded Olympic squad.

CRICKET - India has crushed Bangladesh by nine wickets earlier today to power into the gold medal match at the Asian Games. Awaiting their young, but still formidable, side in Saturday’s title-decider will be Pakistan or Afghanistan, who meet later.

Get ready for a slightly chilly day, with the sun cheekily peeking through the usual batch of clouds. We’ll start with some morning fog and temperatures of 6-8°C. In the afternoon, the meter will rise to 15-17°C.
