During a routine check of the Ukraine International Airlines aircraft, 500 young French bulldogs were found, of which 38 dead. The surviving animals were severely dehydrated, reports WELT.
One dog breeder, who picked up a different animal in the same cargo hold where the French bulldogs were located, said in an interview with CBC that it was a “horror scene” that felt like a “nightmare”.
Ukraine International Airlines said it was cooperating with the Canadian authorities.
French bulldogs are popular with Canadian dog owners. Each puppy can be worth up to 4,000 (3,500 euros) dollars, with the though that they are bred at home in Canada. But few know where the dogs are coming from, and how many are imported from abroad.
