CYCLING PATHS - While the project “Vëlosummer 2023" has started, some cycling paths are not even finished yet. The Ministry of Mobility admits it is not progressing as quickly with the expansion of cycling paths as anticipated in 2018. So far, only 73 km of the planned 430 km have been constructed. Many of the paths are stuck in the research stage, where studies have to be conducted to determine whether it is at all possible to build a pathway.

GREVENMACHER STABBING - On Saturday afternoon, two people were injured in a knife fight in a pub in Grevenmacher. The offender was heard by a judge on Sunday morning. According to police information, both victims were stabbed in the back. They were treated by emergency services on the spot and then brought to hospital. It was determined that the injuries occurred in the bathroom of the pub.

A7 ROAD WORKS - And in bad news for drivers, it seems like there’s no end in sight with the road works on the A7, especially in the Gousselerbierg tunnel. For the past 14 days, the tube in the Lorenzweiler direction has been closed to traffic and will stay so until 13 August. Traffic will run bidirectionally through the other tunnel, in the direction of Schoenfels. In mid-August, construction will start in the other direction. During this period, the speed is limited to 50 kilometers per hour and is also constantly controlled via radar.

UKRAINE LATEST - Ukraine will begin consultations with the United States this week on security guarantees to fight the war in Ukraine. The US and G7 leaders promised Kyiv they would each provide it with military capability at the NATO summit in Lithuania in July. Meanwhile President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned war is coming back to Russia, after a drone attack on the capital Moscow. Russia’s defence ministry said three Ukrainian drones were downed on Sunday, with two crashing into offices and briefly shutting an international airport.

BURNING SHIP - According to Dutch authorities, the smouldering cargo ship Freemantle Highway is being towed to a temporary anchorage. As of early evening yesterday, the vessel, which caught fire off the Dutch coast was being towed about 17 kilometres away, close to the island of Ameland. Rescuers want to prevent the ship from sinking, which would cause an ecological disaster, due to the millions of litres of oil that would leak out. Fire broke out on the ship, packed with more than 3700 cars, on Tuesday, killing one member of the crew and prompting a massive effort to extinguish the flames.

PAKISTAN ATTACK - At least 44 people have been killed and dozens more wounded by a suicide bombing at a political rally organised by an Islamist party in northwest Pakistan. The motivation behind the attack is not yet clear.

FORMULA 1 - Max Verstappen has reeled off his 8th successive Grand Prix win of the season. He won in Belgium to take a 125 point lead in the title race. Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez came in second place. He says it was another great weekend for them.

FOOTBALL - In the Women’s World Cup, the co-hosts New Zealand have been knocked out after a goal-less draw with Switzerland put their opponents along with Norway. Colombia shocked Germany with a 2-1 win, whilst Morocco won for the first time in the tournament, defeating South Korea 1-0. There are 4 matches today. Japan plays Spain, Costa Rica plays Zambia. Later on Canada meets Australia and Ireland will play against Nigeria.

CYCLING - The Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering has won the second edition of the women’s Tour de France. She finished the eight-stage race over three minutes ahead of Belgian teammate Lotte Kopecky and Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma.

Weather

It’s another cloudy day with some rain showers forecast throughout the day. Temperatures in the morning will start at around 15°C and will climb just above the 20°C mark in the afternoon and evening.
