
MONDORF VELODROME - The first building works start on the velodrome in Mondorf-les-Bains today. A large sports and school complex will also be built around the structure. Construction work should be completed in 4 to 5 years and it is estimated to cost around 55 million euros.
SIREN TEST - Like every first Monday of the month, the sirens will be tested again today. Warning text messages are no longer sent out systematically.
SPAIN FIRE - A devastating fire erupted at a nightclub in Murcia, in southeastern Spain, during the early hours of Sunday. At least 13 people have been killed, with fears the toll could still rise as rescue workers continue to sift through the debris.
MEXICO CHURCH - A rescue operation is ongoing in Northern Mexico, after a church collapsed killing 9 and injuring at least 40 people. Dozens are believed to be trapped under the rubble.
MEXICO CRASH - At least 10 migrants have died and 25 were injured early on Sunday when a cargo truck overturned on a highway in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. It is the second fatal crash in less than a week involving migrants. A source in the prosecutor’s office told AFP the victims were apparently from Cuba and all were women, including one minor.
UKRAINE SUPPORT - Ukraine’s President Volodymr Zelensky has said that nothing will weaken his country’s fight against Russia. His comments come a day after the US halted funding for Kyiv, as congress scrambles to agree on a budget. The EU has promised further aid to Ukraine. The EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell said on a visit to Kyiv that he had proposed to member states to give 5 billion euros a year until 2027. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has now lasted 586 days.
NOBEL PRIZES - It’s the start of the Nobel Prize week. Today, shortly before midday, the prize for medicine will be announced in Stockholm. Narcolepsy, cancer or mRNA vaccine research are tipped to win. Tomorrow it’s physics, followed by chemistry and literature. And on Friday, it will be announced who will receive the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
RUGBY WORLD CUP - South Africa beat Tonga yesterday 49-18, while Australia kept their faint hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive with a 34-14 victory over Portugal.
GOLF - Europe has won the Ryder Cup against the United States. With a 16.5-11.5 victory, the USA remain without a win on European soil since 1993.
NFL SWIFT - And one of the biggest live audiences in the American football season has gathered in New Jersey to watch not just the New York Jets play the Kansas City Chiefs but also try to spot the popstar Taylor Swift. The singer’s rumoured romance with the Chief’s player Travis Kelce has led to a spike in NFL ticket sales.
