
HOUSING MARKET - The Luxembourg housing market continues to experience significant price declines, with the latest report from the Housing Observatory revealing an 8.3% drop over the past year.
UN BETTEL - During the fifth day of the General Assembly’s annual high-level debate, Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Xavier Bettel, expressed Luxembourg’s deep empathy with Ukraine while shedding light on the many conflicts happening across the globe. Calling for a just and peaceful resolution in Ukraine, Bettel drew parallels to Luxembourg’s own history of being invaded by its neighbours, emphasising the importance of the EU’s role in maintaining peace.
TRAM EXTENSION - From Findel to the stadium, from Hollerich to the CHL… In ten years, the tram network will expand in order to cover the entire capital. Last Friday, the ministry of mobility and Luxtram announced their future expansion of the tram network. A much more complete network is the plan for Luxembourg City, since the main areas will hold even more tracks and new routes in less than ten years.
GUILLAUME CEREMONY - Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume will officially assume the role of lieutenant representative on 8 October, as appointed by his father, the Grand Duke. Guillaume will be sworn into his new role at the Chamber of Deputies and seats will be made available for members of the public. AUSTRIA ELECTION - It’s official. The far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) has won the parliamentary elections in Austria for the first time, with 29.2% of the votes. The second strongest force is the governing conservative People’s Party, who have ruled out working in a coalition.
MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT – Israel says it has hit more targets in Lebanon, saying it’s struck dozens of Hezbollah sites. It has also carried out airstrikes on a Houthi-controlled area in Yemen. US President Joe Biden told reporters he hoped a full-scale war in the Middle East can still be avoided.
STORM HELENE - At least 93 people are now known to have died across several American states after high winds and torrential rain caused by Storm Helene. Homes have been destroyed, roads flooded out and power has been cut off to millions.
UK COAL - The UK will become the first major economy to phase out coal power later today, when the country’s last coal-fired power station closes at midnight. The closure of Ratcliffe-on Soar, which has been generating electricity for nearly 60 years, marks a symbolic step in the UK’s ambition to decarbonise electricity by 2030, and become carbon neutral by 2050.
KRIS KRISTOFFERSON DIES - Kris Kristofferson, the award-winning country singer and actor has died, aged 88. A statement said he passed away peacefully at his home in Hawaii, surrounded by family. His biggest hits included “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Help Me Make It Through The night.”
CYCLING - Tadej Pogacar added the world road race title to his Tour de France and Giro d’Italia victories yesterday to become the first man since 1987 to win cycling’s triple crown in the same season. The 26-year-old Slovenian won the 273km race around Zurich in a time of 6hr 27min 30sec, with Australia’s Ben O’Connor in second place and Mathieu van der Poel in third.
SEMI-MARATHON - Yesterday the Route du Vin race was held in Remich, where the national champion titles in the semi-marathon were also run. In the women’s category, Margaux Bruls came first and in the men’s, Nial Foley is the new champion.
FOOTBALL -Some results from yesterday’s matches:
in the German Bundesliga, Bremen won 4-3 against Hoffenheim. And Frankfurt beat Holstein Kiel 4-2.
In the English Premier League, Manchester United lost at home 3-0 to Tottenham.
In Spain, Atletico and Real scored a 1-1 derby draw.
And in France, Strasbourg beat Marseille 1-0.
Luxembourg is entering the darker and rainier months. You can expect some rain this morning, more rain in the afternoon and rain in the evening. The only silver lining is that it won’t be too cold - morning temperatures are around 8-10°C, rising to 12-15°C in the afternoon.
