Amazon has submitted an application to US authorities to launch 5,105 satellites into orbit, aiming to create a direct satellite internet network for smartphones and other devices.

The project will partially rely on the existing infrastructure of satellite operator Globalstar, which Amazon plans to acquire for approximately $11.6 billion. The satellite network is intended to improve connectivity, particularly for people living in remote areas, and will also serve as a valuable resource during emergency operations or critical situations.

Amazon expects to begin offering its satellite service from 2028, entering into direct competition with SpaceX’s Starlink network, which already provides similar satellite-based internet services.

Currently, Amazon has launched more than 390 satellites, with long-term plans to deploy over 3,200 satellites to expand its network.
