On Saturday evening at around 10 pm, two wagons of the attraction “Höllenblitz” crashed into each other, for yet unknown reasons.
Of the possibilities brought up is a defective motor. The injured were treated by first responders on site, but two people had to be transported to a nearby hospital.
Like any other ride, it had been tested by the German monitoring agency (TÜV) before the start of Oktoberfest.
The ride’s manager told German newspaper Bild that, at full capacity, one wagon weighs 8 tons and even if the wagon is only moving at 5 or 10 km/h, there is still a lot of power being exerted.
The police have closed the ride and are now investigating the exact cause of the accident. An expert has also been brought into the case.
The world-renown traditional celebration brings around six million visitors from around the world to Munich. About a third of the visitors come from outside of Germany, many of them from Asia.
