Luxembourg
DEFENCE SPENDING – Luxembourg is boosting defence spending and investing heavily in the coming years. The LuxDefence association, launched yesterday evening, brings together 80 companies in the sector. The Economics Ministry is working on legislation to enable domestic weapons production and export.
FUEL PRICES – Fuel prices have dropped from midnight. Diesel fell by 3.6 cents to €1.50 per litre, while 98 unleaded petrol is now 3 cents cheaper at €1.616. Heating oil sees a reduction, now costing €0.92 per litre.
MATERNITY CARE – Today also marks Roses Revolution Day, highlighting violence and disrespect during childbirth. Luxembourg's Association of Midwives (ALSF) is urging politicians to improve maternity care, calling for continuous one-to-one support throughout pregnancy, birth and also in the period afterwards.
UKRAINE DECLARATION – 20 parliaments, including Luxembourg's Chamber of Deputies, have signed a declaration stating nothing should be decided about Ukraine without Ukraine, or about Europe without Europe. DP deputy Gusty Graas signed on behalf of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
World
BELGIUM STRIKES – Belgium's general strike enters its second day with widespread disruption. Schools are shut across Wallonia and Flanders. Crèches, post offices, and municipal buildings also remain closed. Hospitals are operating emergency services only. The strike follows the government's new budget plan, which includes substantial savings measures.
UKRAINE WAR – Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities continue despite peace efforts. Air strikes around Kyiv have hit residential buildings this morning, killing at least three people. Energy infrastructure was the main target ahead of winter. As for negotiations, President Zelenskyy says the initial US peace plan has been substantially modified. He plans to speak to Donald Trump and other leaders in the coming days, though details of the agreement remain undisclosed.
UN WOMEN – The UN reports over 50,000 women and girls were killed by someone close to them in 2024 - one every 10 minutes. The figures mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. In 60% of cases, the perpetrator was a partner or family member.
ISRAEL HEZBOLLAH STRIKE – Iran's Revolutionary Guards are pledging revenge after Israel killed a Hezbollah leader in Beirut at the weekend. The ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, in place since last November, continues to be violated by both sides.
JIMMY CLIFF RIP – Reggae icon Jimmy Cliff has died aged 81 following a seizure and pneumonia. The singer of hits like "You Can Get It If You Really Want" and star of "The Harder They Come" helped bring reggae to a global audience. Jamaica's prime minister called him "a true cultural giant".
Sport
FOOTBALL – And the Champions League returns tonight with the fifth matchday of the league phase. Chelsea host Barcelona, Manchester City face Leverkusen, Dortmund take on Villarreal, Marseille meet Newcastle and Ajax play Benfica.
Everton beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford despite playing with 10 men for most of the match. Idrissa Gueye was sent off after slapping teammate Michael Keane, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's superb strike secured a shock victory for David Moyes' side.
INDY CAR – Mick Schumacher will compete in the full 2026 IndyCar season with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. The 26-year-old son of seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher made 43 F1 starts for Haas and has been racing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship.
