ROAD ACCIDENT – Rescue services are reporting an injured motorist on the Arlon motorway last night around 11pm at the Cessange junction, after colliding with a wild boar. Emergency services from the city and Sanem-Differdange attended the scene.

NATURAL RIVERS – The Environment and Interior Ministries launched a national consultation on re-naturalising the country's rivers and streams at Senningen Castle yesterday. The aim is to make Luxembourg more resilient against flooding and improve the quality of our waterways. Municipalities and working groups will work towards a national action plan in the coming months.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK – Luxembourg's statistics office, STATEC, has briefed MPs from the parliamentary Finance Commission on Luxembourg's economic outlook. Growth is forecast at just 1% this year, rising gradually to 2.4% by 2029. Employment growth will remain modest, doing little to reduce the 6% unemployment rate. In housing, existing properties are selling better, but new builds continue to struggle.

LUXEXPO CONCERTS – Den Atelier has unveiled its 2026 concert lineup, promising another big year for live music in Luxembourg. The Luxexpo Open Air series will feature The Offspring on 1 July, Gorillaz on 5 July, Lenny Kravitz on 6 July, with Katy Perry playing on 14 July. Organisers say the mix of punk, pop, and rock acts will make Luxembourg a major stop on next summer’s European tour circuit.

World

COP30 Indigenous protesters and students clashed with security at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil yesterday, causing minor injuries. Demonstrators breached security barriers at the conference entrance in Belém, demanding their voices be heard on Amazon protection. The UN says two security staff were hurt and the site was briefly evacuated before order was restored. Protesters say indigenous concerns about ongoing environmental destruction are being ignored despite their increased participation at the summit.

US SHUTDOWN – The US House of Representatives is meeting at 6pm this evening to vote on an interim budget that would end the government shutdown. The Senate has already approved the measure, which would fund federal operations until the end of January. The shutdown has left tens of thousands of civil servants without pay since the first of October.

G7 MEETING – G7 foreign ministers are gathering in Canada for two days of talks focusing on the Middle East and Ukraine. Germany's Annalena Baerbock has urged unity amongst her counterparts, warning that peace and security face unprecedented challenges. Berlin is also announcing a further 40 million euros for Ukraine to repair heating systems before winter arrives.

AIRPLANE CRASH – Turkey on Wednesday said all 20 people onboard a military cargo plane that crashed in Georgia on its return from Azerbaijan had died. The plane had taken off from Ganja airport in western Azerbaijan on Tuesday afternoon but crashed shortly after crossing the border into eastern Georgia, the defence ministry said after the incident.

Sport

FOOTBALL – Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo says next year's World Cup will be his last as he winds down one of the all-time great careers. The 40-year-old forward, with more than 950 club and international goals, also said he would retire from football in "one or two years". 

Spain's Lamine Yamal has been withdrawn from the national squad for their World Cup qualifiers. The Spanish football federation expressed surprise and concern after discovering the 18-year-old had undergone an invasive radiofrequency procedure to treat a groin problem. Yamal had been due to join the squad for training on Monday.

TENNISCarlos Alcaraz has beaten Taylor Fritz at the ATP Finals in Turin, moving closer to finishing the year as world number one. The five-time Grand Slam champion came from behind to win 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, and now needs just one more victory to secure the top ranking for the second time.
