The mayor-elect of Herdecke, Iris Stalzer (SPD), who was seriously injured in a knife attack, was stabbed by her daughter.

Stalzer accused the 17-year-old during questioning, police said on Wednesday. The local politician is now out of danger.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, investigators are classifying the act as grievous bodily harm. It is assumed to be a family matter, said senior public prosecutor Bernd Haldorn. There are no grounds for the daughter’s detention. She is therefore to be released by police, along with the 15-year-old son who was initially taken into custody after the attack. The children are to be handed over to the youth welfare office.

This is a developing story and more information will follow.
