A Steller's sea eagle that escaped from Amnéville Zoo has been safely recaptured after several days on the loose near the Luxembourg border, the zoo confirmed Wednesday.

The Amnéville Zoo has successfully recaptured Ryu, a massive Steller's sea eagle that had escaped from its handlers during a training session several days ago.

The zoo confirmed the successful recovery of the bird on Wednesday morning. Ryu was located and captured in Roussy-le-Village, where it had been sighted after flying near the Luxembourg border – a significant distance from its home aviary.

The eagle, a species known for its impressive wingspan of up to 2.5 metres and a weight of 9 kilogrammes, had drawn local attention. Photos shared by residents showed the large bird of prey perched calmly on a garden swing, offering a striking sense of its size.

With the recapture complete, Ryu is now set to return to the safety of its enclosure at the zoo.
