Two drivers face licence confiscation and traffic violation investigations after a confrontation during lane merging escalated into a destructive collision on the Luxembourg-border A64 motorway, police confirmed.
German authorities are seeking witnesses after an apparent road rage incident led to a collision on the A64 motorway near the Luxembourg border Wednesday morning.
The Trier Police Headquarters reported the incident began at approximately 10.25am, when a lorry and blue Seat travelled parallel in separate lanes toward Luxembourg. Roadwork-related lane reductions required the 55-year-old lorry driver to merge behind the 35-year-old Seat driver using zip-merging protocol. Initial investigations suggest that this led to a dispute between the two drivers.
Following the construction zone, when two lanes reopened, the situation escalated. The authorities state that the Seat overtook the lorry and abruptly braked, causing a collision that spun the car 180 degrees before the lorry pushed it nearly 2 kilometres before both vehicles stopped near the Wasserbillig exit.
While no injuries occurred, the car sustained total damage. The public prosecutor's office has confiscated both drivers' licences and launched investigations for multiple traffic violations.
The incident caused temporary disruptions near the Wasserbillig service area, involving both Luxembourg police and Germany's Schweich motorway patrol. Witnesses are asked to contact Schweich authorities at +49 6502 91650.
