A wrinkly bulldog mix named Petunia has been crowned the World’s Ugliest Dog in California, winning $5,000 and a spot on NBC's morning show, with organisers emphasising the event's aim to showcase the charm of shelter dogs and encourage adoption.

The title may not sound flattering, but the World’s Ugliest Dog contest aims to show that even ‘ugly’ dogs have a beautiful side.

With short legs, a heavily wrinkled face and a sleepy gaze, these less-than-glamorous traits helped Petunia to victory. The bulldog cross was crowned the World’s Ugliest Dog at a competition in California.

The two-year-old won the contest – held annually since the 1970s – on Friday 8 August in Santa Rosa. Her owner, Shannon Nyman from the US state of Oregon, was visibly delighted with the $5,000 (£3,900) prize.

Jinny Lu, a five-year-old pug with a permanently protruding tongue, came second. The pug had already taken part in 2023 but failed to make the podium then. This year, her owner, Michelle Grady, went home with $3,000 (£2,350).

In third place was Poppy, a seven-year-old Chinese crested dog with extensive bare skin. His distinctive look earned him $2,000 (£1,570).

To secure a place on the podium, canine contestants had to appear on stage before spectators, who indicated how ‘ugly’ they found each dog by clapping. A jury then voted, taking into account the dogs’ appearance, personality and the audience reaction.

Morning show appearance

Petunia will now enjoy another big moment. In addition to the title, she and her owner will be flown to New York, where they will appear on NBC’s morning show on Monday.

Highlighting the beauty of ‘ugly’ dogs

The organisers stress that the aim is not to mock ‘ugly’ dogs but to celebrate their appeal. Many contestants come from animal shelters, and the event also serves as a call to give abandoned animals a new home.
