Luxembourg 

LABOUR NEGOTIATIONS – The Luxembourg government is convening with union leaders and employers again today, following the first high-level talks last week. The closed-door meetings aim to rebuild social dialogue following the massive OGBL–LCGB demonstration on 28 June.

ACCIDENTS – Rescue services are reporting that a child was injured in Schifflange last night, when it was hit by a motorcycle. Two more people were injured later in a collision of two cars on the A7 motorway.

SCHOOLS PROGRAMME – From September 2026, primary schools will offer the choice between literacy in either French or German starting in cycle 1.2.This means that children are going to be categorised into different groups for language and mathematics classes. Other classes will be mixed.

GORDON RAMSAY – British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay took part in Ironman Luxembourg yesterday.  For this year’s event, Ramsay joined thousands of competitors tackling a 1.9km swim in Germany, followed by a 90km bike ride through France, concluding with a 21.1km run along the Luxembourg side of the Moselle, finishing in Remich. He completed the race in a time of 06:52:28.

World

EU/US TARIFFS  EU ministers are meeting today to discuss their trade strategy with the US, after President Trump threatened 30% tariffs by August 1 if no agreement is reached. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has insisted the EU still wants to reach an accord – and on Sunday delayed retaliation over separate US tariffs on steel and aluminium as a sign of goodwill. Luxembourg is represented by Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel.

UKRAINE WAR – President Donald Trump says that Washington will send Patriot air defence systems to Kyiv and has hinted at new sanctions on Russia. The US president's announcement of the much-needed weapons for Ukraine came after he earlier said he would make a "major statement... on Russia" later today. Trump is also meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Washington today.

GERMANY MURDER TRIAL – German palliative care doctor, Johannes M., is going on trial in Berlin today for allegedly murdering 15 patients with lethal injections between 2021 and 2024 – crimes investigators fear may be part of a much larger pattern, as 96 additional deaths remain under investigation.

GAZA DEATHS – Gaza's civil defence agency says that Israeli air strikes on Sunday killed more than 40 Palestinians, including eight children at a water distribution point. Delegations from Israel and the Palestinian militant group have now spent a week trying to agree on a temporary truce to halt 21 months of devastating fighting in the Gaza Strip.

FRANCE MILITARY – It is Bastille Day in France and the traditional military parade is taking place on the Champs-Elysées today. Due to the current conflicts, France wants to show strength and especially emphasize its rapid deployment capabilities: 7,000 soldiers, 250 vehicles and 65 aircraft will take part in the parade. This year's guest of honor is the Indonesian president. On Sunday, President Emmanuel Macron called for a massive boost to France's defence spending, saying freedom in Europe was facing a greater threat than at any time since the end of World War II.

Sport

TENNIS – Jannik Sinner has warned Carlos Alcaraz that he will get even stronger after beating his arch-rival to win his first Wimbledon title on Sunday. The Italian's 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory ended Alcaraz's two-year reign as Wimbledon champion and gave Sinner his fourth Grand Slam crown.

FOOTBALLChelsea have won the Club World Cup, beating Paris St Germain in the final 3-0.

England has reached the quarter-finals of Women's Euro 2025 after thrashing Wales 6-1 and taking second place in Group D behind France, who won 5-2 against the Netherlands. England will face Sweden on Thursday, while France will take on Germany in the last quarter-final on Saturday.

CYCLING – Tim Merlier has won stage nine of the Tour de France. There is no change atop the overall standings with Tadej Pogacar now holding a 54 second advantage over Remco Evenepoel in second with French starlet Kevin Vauquelin third. You can watch the 10th stage LIVE today at 3pm on RTL Today. Today’s stage is from Ennezat to Le Mont-Dore Puy de Sancy, a 165km hilly race.

Weather

We are expecting a stormy start to the week in the Grand Duchy with rain set all day and the possibility of some local thunderstorms in the morning and afternoon. Also, the wind could reach up to 50km/h. Temperatures start off at around 16–18 degrees, only hitting highs of 23–24 degrees in the late afternoon.
