Fifteen minutes outside of Trier, there was an explosion on Christmas Eve in a single-family home, in which the owner was seriously injured.

The Trier police released new information about the case on Monday.

Apparently, the owner of the house in the municipality of Hockweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate is said to have "deliberately caused" the explosion and the fire that followed.

Investigations into how exactly the explosion and fire occurred are ongoing, according to the police.

They are now investigating the 56-year-old man on suspicion of serious arson and causing an explosion. At the request of the Trier public prosecutor, the investigating judge has issued an arrest warrant against the suspect.

The man, who was alone in the house at the time of the explosion on Christmas Eve, was seriously injured but is now out of danger. According to the police, the material damage from the explosion and fire is in the "high six-figure range."
