Around a hundred flights have been cancelled in the UK this Sunday due to strong winds sweeping across the country, causing widespread transport disruptions during the busy pre-Christmas weekend, according to London’s Heathrow Airport.

Due to high winds and airspace restrictions, around 100 flights were cancelled on Sunday, according to London Heathrow Airport, the busiest airport in both the UK and Europe. The disruption follows a series of cancellations on Saturday, primarily affecting British Airways passengers.

In addition, P&O Ferries, a major British shipping company, announced the cancellation of all services on its route between Larne (Northern Ireland) and Cairnryan (southern Scotland) until at least 8pm GMT on Sunday.

The adverse weather conditions have also affected other forms of transport. Roads had to be closed, and trains were operating at reduced speeds since Saturday, resulting in cancellations and significant delays. This comes during an extremely busy weekend as millions of Britons are travelling.

The UK’s Met Office issued yellow warnings for high winds, which are expected to continue until 9.00pm GMT on Sunday, with gusts reaching up to 125 km/h. However, the winds are forecast to subside by Sunday night.
