To mark this year's International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the UN published a report on femicides in 2023.

The term ‘femicide’ refers to a fatal crime in which women are the victims. It usually involves murder or a fatal blow, but an assault with fatal consequences can also be described as a femicide.

The UN report estimates that 85,000 women and girls were killed worldwide in 2023. In 60 per cent of cases (around 51,000), the partner or a family member was the murderer.

This comes out to 140 deaths caused by partners or family members every day. That is one victim every ten minutes, according to the UN.
