LIEUTENANT REPRESENTATIVE – Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume will officially become the Grand-Duke's "Lieutenant representative" tomorrow. The announcement was made earlier this year by his father Grand Duke Henri. While the move does not signify the Grand Duke's abdication, it is seen as a step in that direction. Next year Grand Duke Henri will celebrate his 25th year on the throne, coinciding with his 70th birthday.

BREAST CANCER SOLIDARITY RUN – An estimated 2,400 people took part in the Breast Cancer Solidarity Run in Hesperange on Saturday. Organised by Europa Donna Luxembourg, the 5km run took place to raise awareness for women and families impacted by breast cancer in Luxembourg.

World

MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT – Today marks the one-year anniversary of Hamas's deadly October 7 attack on Israel. Vigils and rallies are being held in the country calling for the return of the hostages. Air strikes continue in Gaza with an added focus to Iran-backed Hezbollah and Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to achieve victory while the country fights two wars. 

French President Emanuel Macron has called for a halt on arms deliveries to Israel for use in Gaza. Macron condemned Israel's military actions in Gaza and Lebanon. He appealed for a return to political dialogue and warned that the ongoing war is fueling hatred and insecurity for Israel. President Macron reiterated his concern over the conflict in Gaza that is continuing despite repeated calls for a ceasefire.

NOBEL PRIZE – The 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine will be announced today in Stockholm. Cancer research on drugs treating cardiovascular illnesses could win a Nobel Prize. One of the possible laureates is Kevan Shokat, an American biologist who figured out how to block the KRAS cancer gene behind a third of cancers, including challenging-to-treat lung, colon and pancreatic tumours.
 
TUNISIA ELECTIONS – Tunisia's incumbent President Kais Saied is set to win the country's presidential election with 89.2 percent support despite a low turnout, according to exit polls. Three years after Saied staged a sweeping power grab, rights groups fear re-election will only further entrench his rule in the country which became the only democracy to emerge from the Arab Spring uprisings.

ENGLISH CHANNEL MIGRANTS – Four migrants including a two-year-old toddler died over the weekend while attempting to cross the English Channel in a perilous journey led by people smugglers. A record 973 migrants crossed the Channel in small boats on Saturday, the same day the four migrants died. According to the UK Home Office, in 2024 alone, more than 26,600 migrants have crossed the Channel on small boats.

Sport

FOOTBALL Erik ten Hag insisted he retains the support of Manchester United's hierarchy after struggling against Aston Villa. Ten Hag is fighting to avoid the sack after United's dismal start to the Premier League season but their latest spluttering display did little to suggest he can turn the tide.

CRICKET – Scotland suffered their second defeat of the Women's T20 World Cup as West Indies strolled to a six-wicket win in Dubai.

Meanwhile, India carved out a 13th win in 16 T20 meetings with old rivals Pakistan. They remain fourth in the group, with Pakistan just ahead of them on net run rate.

BASKETBALL – LeBron James and eldest son Bronny James claimed a piece of NBA history on Sunday after making their long-awaited first appearance alongside each other for the LA Lakers. The duo appeared together at the start of the second quarter in the Lakers' pre-season game against the Phoenix Suns in Palm Desert.
