BORDER CHECKS – Since Monday morning, a stationary checkpoint has been in operation on the German side of the Trier motorway, just a few kilometers beyond the Luxembourg border. The stationary checkpoint is set up to operate continuously, 24 hours a day, for the next seven days. According to Stefan Döhn, spokesman for the Trier Federal Police, only random checks are being conducted in an effort to minimise disruption for commuters. While authorities seek to avoid major disruption to everyday traffic, drivers are advised to have their documents, including identity cards and vehicle papers, ready for inspection.
IODINE NUCLEAR – If you live within a 10-kilometre radius of the Cattenom nuclear power plant in France, it is recommended to obtain or renew iodine tablets, a critical precautionary measure in the event of a nuclear accident. According to authorities in the Moselle region pharmacies will hand out iodine tablets free of charge and no documentation is required to receive the tablets. Authorities stress that this initiative is purely preventive.
TRAIN SERVICES – Services on the trainline between Mersch and Kautenbach have returned to normal, with train traffic resuming gradually last night following an accident early evening at Ettelbruck station. A person fell under a train and was injured.

EUROPE FLOODING – Flooding sparked by Storm Boris in central Europe has burst dams, knocked out power and killed at least 18 people. Thousands of people have had to be evacuated and many households are without electricity and water. Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania are the countries most affected. But mobile flood protection walls have also been set up to protect Dresden's old city as the Elbe river level is rising, with the peak expected mid-week.
EU COMMISSION – European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen is expected to unveil her new top team today. As part of the bloc's careful balancing act, the German head of the EU executive must choose the line-up for her second term from nominees put forward by the other 26 member states. According to commission circles, the list of names in the departments is not complete. Slovenia, for example, has not yet confirmed a candidate and France's EU commissioner Thierry Breton abruptly resigned yesterday, in a dramatic upset.

META RUSSIA – Meta has said it is banning Russian state media outlets from its apps around the world due to "foreign interference activity." The ban comes after the United States accused RT and employees of the state run agency of funneling $10 million dollars to covertly fund influence campaigns on social media channels including TikTok, Instagram, X, and YouTube.

An independent panel is expected to hear evidence for at least two months and with a verdict unlikely until well into 2025.
