A large fire broke out at the Pépinville estate in Richemont on Monday, burning the castle and surrounding buildings.

Fire fighters raced to the scene shortly after 5am on Monday morning, reporting that the castle's roof was "completely ablaze" and in danger of spreading to the nearby chapel.

Flames were said to be be visible from the A31 motorway.

The estate, owned by the municipality, was the subject of a sale project at the end of last year in order to create housing. It was previously used for after-school activities.

According to France Bleu, the fire was brought under control around 11am and there were no casualties. Firefighters were still working from outside using aerial equipment, due to the high risk of the floors collapsing. The castle has been uninhabited for the last fourteen years. No casualties were reported.
