Luxembourg 

DRUNK DRIVING - The police was kept busy over the weekend with cases of speeding and drunk driving. Among the offences, a man was driving on the A4 motorway at a speed exceeding 190 kilometers per hour. When officers attempted to stop him, the driver changed lanes and accelerated further. Finally, the police managed to stop the car but only at the Belval exit. As a result of his excessive speeding, the driver's license was confiscated, and a complaint was filed against him.

ING MARATHON - Despite temperatures being warmer than usual, the marathon unfolded without any major incidents taking place, according to the rescue services. 15767 runners and a huge crowd were gathered in the City to experience the thrills of the marathon together. A total of 114 people, runners and spectators, needed to be attended by rescue teams. 18 needed to be hospitalised.

World

RUSSIA RESHUFFLE - President Putin has carried out a reshuffle of his key security posts. The long serving defence minister Sergei Shoigu is being replaced after 12 years. The deputy prime minister Andrei Belousov, who is an economist will take on the role. 
Meanwhile, Russia has captured four more villages in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, as thousands of residents were evacuated from the offensive in an area where Russian troops were repelled in 2022.

LITHUANIA ELECTIONS - The presidential elections in Lithuania are going to a second round. In the first round, the moderate current president Gitanas Nauseda did not get the necessary absolute majority with 46%. The centre-right Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte came in at 16%. The main topics in the election campaign were security and defence, because of the war in Ukraine and tensions with neighbouring Russia.

INDONESIA DEATHS - The number of people killed by flash floods and cold lava flow from a volcano in western Indonesia over the weekend has risen to 41 with 17 more missing, according to a local disaster agency.  Hours of heavy rain caused large volcanic rocks to roll down one of Indonesia's most active volcanos into two districts on Sumatra island, while flooding inundated roads, homes and mosques.

MOUNT EVEREST RECORDS - Two records were broken on Mount Everest yesterday. The Nepalese climber Kami Rita reached the summit of the highest mountain in the world for the 29th time - more times than any other person before him. The British climber Kenton Cool was at the top for the 18th time - this is also a new record for a non-Nepalese.

EUROVISION WINNER - Nemo was given a hero's welcome on returning to Switzerland after winning the Eurovision Song Contest, being greeted by a whirlwind of cheers, hugs and clanging cowbells. Nemo Mettler flew into Zurich Airport on Sunday to be welcomed by several hundred fans, waving flags and banners and chanting the 24-year-old's name. Nemo won Eurovision 2024 in Malmo in Sweden in the early hours of Sunday, with the highly personal song "The Code", which encapsulated the performer's journey towards realising their non-binary gender identity.

Sport

FOOTBALL Starting with the Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen won 5-0 against Bochum, stretching their season-long unbeaten run to 50 games. Bayern beat Wolfsburg 2-0. Hoffenheim beat Darmstadt 6-0.

Arsenal won 1-0 against Manchester United, reclaiming the top spot of the Premier League.

Kylian Mbappe scored on his final home appearance as a Paris Saint-Germain player on Sunday but the French champions suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat against Toulouse on the night they picked up the Ligue 1 championship trophy. Mbappe has confirmed he is leaving PSG when his contract expires at the end of the season, ending a seven-year association with the club. Real Madrid is expected to be his next destination.

CYCLING - Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar remains in first place in the Giro d'Italia. The 9th stage yesterday was won by the Dutchman Olaf Kooij. Today is a first rest day.

RUGBY - New Zealand captain Sam Cane will retire from Test rugby at the end of 2024, calling time on a World Cup winning 12-year international career. His retirement is not a complete surprise. The All Blacks haven't played since they were defeated in the Rugby World Cup final by South Africa last year.

Weather

The day in Luxembourg starts with mist in the early morning and some light drizzle, moving to more substantial rain showers in the afternoon. The cloud cover will be quite dense, staying near 100% throughout much of the day, which will maintain the cool and moist conditions. Temperatures will be relatively cool, beginning at around 14°C in the morning and rising to a maximum of 19°C by the evening.
