PORTUGAL ELECTIONS - The centre-right democratic alliance has won Portugal’s General Election, narrowly beating the incumbent Socialists but it fell well short securing a majority in parliament. The election saw a big surge in support for the far-right Chega party.

GAZA RAMADAN - Palestinians besieged in Gaza by Israel’s war against Hamas are facing a bleak start to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Many families have been shattered by violence, left homeless by Israel’s offensive while aid agencies are warning of near-famine conditions.

HAITI EMBASSIES - Germany and the EU have moved their embassy staff out of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince as the security situation there deteriorates and the country spirals into gang violence.

KATE PHOTO - Leading news agencies, including AFP, Reuters and the Associated Press have withdrawn an official photo of the Princess of Wales from circulation over concerns that it may have been digitally manipulated. The picture, issued by Kensington Palace is the first of Princess Kate to be released since she had abdominal surgery in January. It was taken by her husband Prince William and shows her with her 3 children.

OSCARS 2024 - ‘Oppenheimer’ is the big winner at the Oscars. It won 7 awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. Emma Stone won her second Oscar for Best Actress for her role in ‘Poor Things’.

Luxembourg

LUXEMBOURG RAMADAN - RTL visited the Norstad Islamic Cultural Centre in Diekirch on the eve of Ramadan. The centre is operated by a non-profit organisation established in 2008, which has consistently grown since then. According to President Admir Ceranic, there are now 250 members with a prayer rooms for men and women, as well as a classroom for children.

BIRTH RATE - In 2022, close to 4 million babies were born in the EU, 6,495 of which took place in Luxembourg. In spite of generous parental leave and child benefits, the fertility rate has been falling for years, according to Eurostat. In 1960, Luxembourg counted an average of 2.29 children per woman. This rate dropped to just 1.31 in 2022, falling well below the EU average.

Sport

FOOTBALL - In yesterday’s games in the German Bundesliga: Leader Leverkusen won 2-0 at home against Wolfsburg, Frankfurt beat Hoffenheim 3-1 and Freiburg beat Bochum 2-1. In the English Premier League, there was a 1-1 draw in the top match between Liverpool and Manchester City. And in France, Metz beat Clermont 1-0, and Marseille won against Nantes 2-0.

RUGBY - France steamrolled to a 45-24 demolition of Wales on Sunday. The result leaves France to play England in Lyon next weekend with a shot at runners-up position behind leaders Ireland, while Wales find themselves in a shoot-out with Italy in Cardiff.

CYCLING - The American cyclist Matteo Jorgensen has secured an overall victory in the Paris-Nice race. He came in 2nd spot on the last stage yesterday, won by Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel. Luxembourg’s Kevin Geniets fell about 70km before the finish line and had to give up.

The new week brings back the clouds. Along with a cloudy morning, we might get a little sprinkle of rain here and there. However, the sun might surprise us and give a cheeky peek, occasionally. Temperatures are circling the 3-5°C range, while the afternoon will see a little bump, up to 9-11°C.
