A tornado left a trail of destruction after hitting a village of 3,000 people in Saarland. Over 50 houses were destroyed.

Yesterday around 2.30pm, the Kachelmann weather service warned of a high tornado risk in the Saarland region, close to the Luxembourgish border.

Eyewitnesses told the police of a whirlwind happening between Dirmingen and Urexweiler. The tornado passed through several towns in the Saarland area, causing severe damage in some places.

Roads were temporarily blocked by fallen trees and heaps of broken roof tiles lay in front of the houses. The clean-up work is ongoing.
