The German federal state of Saarland has decided to allow all shops, regardless of their size, to reopen on Monday.

Federal Minister Tobias Hans announced this decision on Saturday in Saarbrücken.

Until now, only shops of up to 800 square metres were allowed to open. The politician from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) stressed that the main focus was now on respecting the hygiene regulations. Within a shop, only one customer per 20 square metres is allowed.

Saarland’s federal government has also decided to reopen museums, zoos, and leisure parks on Monday.

Hairdressers and beauty parlours are also allowed to work again, and by the end of the month the federal government hopes to have worked out a concept with the catering industry.

However, Hans also stressed that further restrictions will still be needed in order to keep the pandemic under control.
