After the first documented coronavirus case in Rhineland-Palatinate was initially reported in Idar-Oberstein, that case was later dismissed.

However, German media are confirming that a 41-year-old soldier from Koblenz has tested positive for the virus.

The soldier, whose identity is being kept under wraps for now, who was ready to fly at the Cologne-Wahn military airport.

He is being monitored at the Bundeswehr Central Hospital in Koblenz since Wednesday afternoon, where he is described as having flu-like symptoms, but is “in good condition”.

The man came forward for voluntary tests because he heard that an acquaintance was being treated in the university clinic in Düsseldorf. Senior physician Thomas Harbaum, said: “previously, the 41-year-old believed it was ‘normal flu’. Now an attempt is being made to find his contact persons in order to inform them ‘because of domestic segregation’.”

For security reasons, the Cologne-Wahn military airport was temporarily closed on Wednesday.

According to the Bundeswehr, a list of contacts of the soldier who had had private or business dealings with him was drawn up and further tests are underway.
