Littered among other waste and refuse, approximately 150 to 200 animal carcasses were found in garbage bags, according to a report filed by police in Saarbrücken on Monday.
In addition, 32 cats in a terrible state of health and neglect have so far been captured on the “completely littered property”.
Several criminal charges were filed against the 73-year-old owner of the gazebo under the Animal Welfare Act, and an investigation is ongoing.
A witness had alerted the police and the animal services on Sunday after his dog ran onto the property. The dog owner heard “a pitiful scream from several cats” from inside the house. He also noticed a “strong smell of decay and animal waste”.
Police, animal welfare personnel and the fire brigade came to the scene and took stock of the gruesome situation.
The disposal of the animal carcasses was so extensive on Sunday that the procedure needed be carried over to Monday.
