Animal rights campaigners responded angrily to the footage, which was filmed at the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology (LPT) on the outskirts of Hamburg. The video was recorded by an activist for Cruelty Free International and SOKO Tierschutz who worked undercover at the facility for several months.
The footage features several instances of violence by technicians against monkeys, while dogs are seen lying in squalid conditions. The psychological stress that the animals would be suffering from, according to Kate Willett of Humane Society International, would render any medical tests conducted on them invalid.
In the past, the LPT has denied accusations that it has breached animal welfare requirements. Authorities have inspected the laboratory nine times since 2015 and observed that the monkeys were kept in “far too small cages”, which would cause them “long-term harm and considerable suffering.”
Activists have planned a demonstration at the facility on Saturday to protest the inhumane conditions. The local authority has already stated that criminal charges have been filed with the state prosecutor.
