With the start of autumn, people have to contend with a new challenge in times of Covid: how to correctly wear my mask outside in the rain?

In places where wearing masks outside is mandatory, the bad weather adds another layer of Coronavirus complications: experts advise that wet or humidmasks become less effective and no longer offer adequate protection.

For disposable masks, it is even recommended to discard them, as Dr. Jimmy Mohamed explained on French radio station Europe 1. Homemade or bought fabric masks also lose their effectiveness when wet.

While wearing masks is one of the distance measures (“gestes barrière”) in Luxembourg, it is not mandatory outside. In places where it is mandatory - such as cross-border cities like Metz - it is recommended to always have a backup mask with you, should you get wet.
