Residents of Compiègne, north of Paris, spotted an injured deer taking refuge on a construction site on the edge of the city to escape hunters with hounds.

It had been the game for over an hour. While the area is known for its hunting ground, activists of hound hunting flocked to the site to ensure the animal is not slaughtered. Once entering an inhabited area, in fact, hunting must be stopped.

The animal was eventually “pardoned” and the deer fled back to the woods when a veterinarian approached him to put him back to sleep and bring him back to a wooded area.

Activists have long criticised hunting with hounds, arguing that it causes severe stress in the hunted animal and unnecessary suffering.
