As announced two weeks ago when the budget was rejected, the mayoral council led by mayor Carole Weigel of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) lost the confidence of the municipal council on Monday morning, following a public vote of no confidence.
The motion passed with the six votes of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) group and the two Democratic Party (DP) councillors, Maurice Muller and Tina Weber. A new majority is expected to take shape quickly.
Immediately after the vote, the municipal council moved into a closed session to elect a new mayoral council. The municipal council elected Patrick Comes (LSAP) as the new mayor. The new mayoral council will be completed by Maurice Muller (DP) and Michael Schenk (LSAP), officially replacing the previous coalition of CSV and DP.
While Carole Weigel and Chantal Kauffmann, previously CSV alderwoman, will remain on the council, Amel Cosic, the former DP alderman, is withdrawing from politics altogether. He will be replaced by Fons Arend, who is set to take over his seat.
Muller and Weber had justified their break with the previous coalition by saying they had not been sufficiently involved in the work of the mayoral council. Weigel and Cosic rejected that accusation, pointing instead to internal tensions within the DP in Wiltz.
