A major redevelopment of Hollenfels’ youth centre and surrounding castle grounds is underway, with the €32 million project set to deliver a modernised facility by its 2028 completion. The new complex will feature a 120-bed youth hostel with 30 rooms, alongside ten specialised meeting rooms for youth activities and dedicated training spaces for educators.
The National Youth Service (SNJ), which operates the site, temporarily relocated activities to Hollenfels’ former primary school during construction. Historic records show that after its acquisition by the state in 1948, the location was initially reserved as a potential emergency hospital before being repurposed for youth programmes.
Helperknapp Mayor Paul Mangen anticipates significant local benefits, telling reporters: “This project will boost our visibility, supporting commerce, tourism, and hospitality businesses.” The SNJ emphasised its continued focus on nature-based programming throughout the transition.
Workers have uncovered historical artifacts including an ancient courtyard bridge, which will eventually become a public feature. The Ministry of Public Works is financing the majority of the project through its €32 million allocation.
