Unequal Pay DayWomen in Luxembourg work for free from 12 December

When comparing the salaries of men and women in Luxembourg, it becomes apparent that women work for free from 12 December until the end of the year, says the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation.

According to the OGBL, women will no longer be paid for their work from 12 December. The wage gap between women and men is said to be around 5.5 percent, according to the latest statistics. If these figures are projected over a year, women are shown to have a shortfall of 20 days.

This latest assessment by the union emphasises that these differences are not just about salary.

The pandemic has revealed the over-representation of women in key sectors such as Horesca, cleaning and commerce. Paradoxically, these are already the lowest-paid occupations. Women are also more likely to work part-time, with 30 percent of women working part-time compared to only five percent of men.

All these realities lead inexorably to a pay gap and later also to a pension gap that gives women less financial independence and less purchasing power, according to the union.
