The dance challenge began in February 2020 after a group of friends in Angola uploaded a clip of themselves dancing to 2019 hit “Jerusalema” by Master KG and Nomcebo Zikode, and has since become a global sensation. People from all walks of life have filmed themselves taking part in the challenge, including hospital staff across the world, Catholic priests in Canada, and even the South African health minister. The upbeat song, which implores God to take the singer to the heavenly city, was streamed more than 60 million times on Spotify and was named the world’s most popular song by Shazam.
The craze has even hit the Grand Duchy, with a video uploaded by healthcare provider Servior garnering over a thousand likes on Facebook. Residents and staff alike are depicted showing off their moves in an attempt to spread enthusiasm and hope to the community in the face of the pandemic. Servior said the participants showed joy and euphoria in their performance as part of a solidarity movement.
