Are there smoke clouds over Luxembourg?

“Yes, or at least, they have passed over Luxembourg. Over the last few days we have seen a zonal flow settle over the northern hemisphere, which pushed the smoke from the fires in Canada towards Europe. Most of the cloud passed over Luxembourg overnight from Thursday to Friday, and now the concentration is highest over eastern Germany.”

Can this smoke reach the ground? And what are the potential effects on our air quality?

“A limited amount of smoke can reach the ground. At times, we’ve noticed slightly elevated carbon monoxide levels. But this has been relatively short-lived and the levels have been comparable to normal air quality in big cities. People who are particularly sensitive may have felt it. But now, our carbon monoxide values are once again at an excellent level, and the air quality is good at the moment.”

How can a smoke cloud like this travel for such long distances?

“It is all down to the jetstream - a strong wind, about 10 to 12 kilometres high, which spreads across the whole hemisphere and is characterised through pushing air from the west into our region.”
