It’s fair time in the village – and in Wellenstein, that’s been the case since 1978. 47 years ago, locals came together for the very first edition. Pierre Sünnen, a native of the Moselle village, has been involved from the beginning. He recalls that before 1981, there wasn’t even a venue for it, as there was a presbytery where the current square lies.
Around 700 people live in this picturesque Moselle village. Where the presbytery once stood, there is now music and merrymaking. People come from near and far to experience the Wellenstein fair in full swing. As several visitors interviewed by RTL put it, there’s a great atmosphere, delicious food, and everything needed for a proper weekend out.
The cooking takes place on site each year. Just for the traditional dish ‘Judd mat Gaardebounen’ – smoked pork collar with broad beans – some 160kg of potatoes are fried in a massive pan over two days.
On the evenings of 27 and 28 July, Wellenstein will once again be turned upside down by its beloved village fair.
