Straight away, Wiseler stated that he “does not expect much” from Prime Minister Xavier Bettel’s state of the nation address on Tuesday afternoon. Nevertheless, Wiseler acknowledged that now is the time to define the main paths for the future of the country.
The president of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) is hoping for concrete statements on growth after the health crisis, as well as on “the major challenges of our time”, such as climate change and digitalisation, but also on subjects that concern the population, such as health policy, school policy, and of course housing. The government’s current housing policy is “not enough”, according to Wiseler. The CSV has specific ideas on this point, such as a tax on speculation, or the extension of the building perimeter, the party president argued.
On the subject of the new Covid-19 regulations, in particular the introduction of the CovidCheck system at the workplace, Wiseler said that these measures are “unfortunately” necessary at present, because the vaccination rate is below the European average in Luxembourg. “We are not where we should be”, the CSV MP criticised.
The government has failed to launch a real awareness campaign, Wiseler stated, adding that it has given too much room to those opposed to vaccination. For Wiseler, this is the reason why stricter regulations have now become unavoidable.
Wiseler stated that he could not yet say whether the CSV would vote for the new Covid-19 law, explaining that he wants to wait for the opinion of the Council of State first. In any case, several questions relating to labour law “still have to be clarified”, the president of the CSV concluded.
